Yesterday expanded

As I said, we went to Draycote yesterday and had a good couple of hours birding.  We met up with some old friends from the local photo club on our way round so that was good too.  Now then, yesterday’s birdies ...
 Magpie;  Wood pigeon;  Crow;  Kestrel;  Rook;  Herring gull; Jackdaw;  Coot;  Mallard;  Lapwing;  Little grebe;  Cormorant;  Buzzard;  Black headed gull;  Tufted duck;  Golden eye;  Canada goose;  Pied wagtail;  Smew;  Pochard;  Teal;  Blue tit;  Great tit;  Greater black backed gull;  Lesser black backed gull;  Blackbird;  Brambling;  Scuap;  Collared dove;  Fieldfare;  Robin;

The two from yesterday gives us list of 48 for this year, not many really, I’ve met guys who have claimed over 100 in the first couple of day!  Ah well ...
A few photo’s then ...

In 2003 the Dorktown and Nonetown Council decided in their wisdom to scrap the weekly bin collection and went to a two weekly collection.  Within three weeks they had to do an about turn and revert back, a lot of red faces ensued.  Well, they’re at it again.  Now the plan is to scrape the current system of weekly collection for both recyclable and black bins and go two weekly collections of both.  The reason behind this are from what I read in the local paper because the town is well down on the recycling amounts and of course they hoping it will save a lot of money doing it anyway.  But hang on a minute ... at the moment we have to use a green bin for garden waste, a red box for tins and glass, an orange bag for plastics, a blue bag for waste paper, large yellow bag for cardboard and last be not least, a black bin for everything else.  The new system will do away with all the bags and boxes and we will get a large (at least I hope it will be a large on one) red bin where all the recycling stuff goes in.  It is hoped that by reducing the amount of containers to be used it will encourage more of us to recycle our waste.  But hang on another minute...

Has anyone else seen what might be a slight problem with the red bin?  We are supposed to rinse out all our tines and bottles before we place them into our current red boxes, OK?  Well, if we put our newspapers into the red bin just after tea time and then follow that up with our empty beer cans and pop cans just before bed time, then some of the contents of the cans may well run out and soak the paper and card.  How soon will it be before they start to demand that dry the can before we put them out do you think?  I won’t do so even if they do!

As it is we rarely put out our stuff on a weekly basis because we tend not to have that much rubbish anyway so moving to a two-weekly collection won’t worry us too much ... apart from remembering which bin is due on which week ;-)))

But I’ve just thought of something else though, how many jobs will go because of it?  We know a few of the guys who work on the recycling teams and they may well be hit hard by it.

Good for the council, yes.  Good for town’s folk, we’ll have to see.  Good for some of the work force?  Not at all.

In general I do agree with the push for recycling but my only problem with it is there is not set standards are there?  This council does it one way, Up in Atherton where we used to live we had a black bin for more normal waste, a brown bin for tines, glass and plastics, a white plastic sack for papers but all wood and cardboard, even the humble cornflake box had to be kept and taken to the council dump, or it went into the normal black bin and if you wanted a green bin for garden waste you had to go on a waiting list for one ... see what I mean, no set standard.
